The Ocean Institute in Dana Point will present its Whale and Marine Life Tour on select dates throughout the fall and early winter of 2026, offering local residents and visitors a chance to explore South Orange County waters. These 2-1/2-hour expeditions, departing from Dana Point Harbor Drive, are designed to introduce participants to the diverse marine life found just miles beyond the jetty. The tours aim to educate attendees about ocean creatures and their habitats through direct observation and hands-on activities.
Aboard the RV Sea Explorer, the Ocean Institute’s 65’ research vessel, passengers will embark on a journey in search of marine mammals and other aquatic species. Potential sightings, as presented by the Ocean Institute, include migrating Blue whales, large schools of playful dolphins, the impressive sunfish known as Mola, as well as sleek harbor seals and sea lions. Professional naturalists from the Ocean Institute will be on hand during each cruise. These experts will provide insights into the lifestyles and behaviors of the ocean creatures that frequent the waters off Dana Point, enhancing the educational experience for all ages.
The cruises are structured to be both safe and engaging for the entire family, with opportunities for hands-on learning. Participants can engage in activities such as sorting through mud samples collected from the ocean floor, which provides a glimpse into benthic ecosystems. Another interactive element involves trawling for plankton, allowing a closer look at the microscopic organisms that form the base of the marine food web. These practical experiences are intended to foster a deeper understanding of the local ocean environment and the life within it.
Each Whale and Marine Life Tour ticket costs $40.00 per person for individuals over three years of age, as stated by the Ocean Institute. This fee also includes access to the Ocean Institute campus and its aquariums, allowing participants to extend their learning and exploration after the cruise. Additional hands-on activities are available throughout the day at the Institute's campus. Registration for these tours must be completed online through the Ocean Institute’s website.
